Doctoral Programme

In accordance with current regulations and legislation, the Department of Economics at the University of Piraeus offers the opportunity to pursue doctoral studies. Doctoral research topics must fall within the areas of expertise of the Department’s faculty members.

Doctoral research is expected to contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge and produce outcomes of publishable quality in leading international conferences and academic journals.

Admission Requirements

Applicants wishing to pursue doctoral studies must hold a degree from a Greek Higher Education Institution (HEI) or an equivalent degree from a foreign university recognized by DOATAP, as well as a postgraduate degree from a Greek HEI or an equivalent institution abroad recognized by DOATAP, in the Department’s areas of expertise or in a related field.

Provided that the above requirements are met, applicants are required to select a research area and a supervising faculty member. Following consultation with the proposed supervisor, applicants must prepare a research proposal for their doctoral study.

Applicants interested in conducting doctoral research may, after consultation with their proposed supervisor (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor), submit an application to the Department Secretariat throughout the year, accompanied by the following documents:

At least two (2) letters of recommendation from faculty members of Greek or international universities, or researchers from recognized research institutions in Greece or abroad

Duration of Studies

The duration of doctoral studies ranges from three (3) to six (6) years. Only in exceptional circumstances may this period be extended, following a decision of the Department General Assembly, for up to one additional year.

The starting date of doctoral studies is defined as the date on which the Department General Assembly formally approves the applicant’s admission.

Language of the Dissertation

Doctoral candidates may choose the language in which the dissertation will be written, following consultation with the supervising faculty member and the three-member advisory committee.

In all cases, the dissertation must include an abstract written in Greek.

Obligations of Doctoral Candidates

Doctoral candidates are required to:

submit an annual progress report to the Department General Assembly,
attend specific postgraduate-level courses offered by the Department or other Departments of the University of Piraeus, if deemed necessary by the supervising faculty member and approved by the advisory committee,
participate in laboratory teaching activities and invigilation of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, if requested,
present the progress of their research in seminars organized by the Department,
participate in the Department’s Research Seminars.

Failure to comply with the Department’s regulations may result in the candidate’s dismissal from the doctoral programme.
