Postdoctoral Research

In accordance with current regulations and legislation, the Department of Economics at the University of Piraeus offers the opportunity to conduct postdoctoral research. The research topic must fall within the areas of expertise of the Department’s faculty members and produce work of publishable quality in leading international academic journals.

Selection of Candidates

Eligible applicants for postdoctoral research must hold a doctoral degree from a Greek Higher Education Institution or an equivalent doctoral qualification from a foreign institution recognized by DOATAP. Candidates are selected by decision of the Department Assembly.

Required Documents

Applicants interested in conducting postdoctoral research may submit an application to the Department Secretariat throughout the year. After reaching an agreement with a supervising faculty member — who must hold the rank of Professor or Associate Professor — regarding the topic and structure of the research, the applicant submits the required documents to the Department Secretariat:

  1. Application form (click here for the form).
  2. Copies of academic qualifications: undergraduate degree, postgraduate degree, and doctoral degree.
  3. At least two (2) letters of recommendation from faculty members of Greek or foreign universities, or from researchers at recognized research centers in Greece or abroad.
  4. Detailed Curriculum Vitae.
  5. Postdoctoral research proposal (click here for the form).

Duration

The duration of postdoctoral research is two (2) to three (3) years. Only in exceptional circumstances may this period be extended by decision of the Department Assembly. The starting date is defined as the date on which the Department Assembly approves the candidate’s admission.

Obligations

Postdoctoral researchers are required to:

  • submit an annual progress report to the Department Assembly,
  • participate in laboratory teaching activities and invigilation of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, if requested,
  • present the progress of their research in seminars organized by the Department,
  • participate in the Department’s Research Seminars.

Failure to comply with the Department’s regulations may result in the candidate’s dismissal from the postdoctoral research programme.
