Quality Assurance

Quality Assurance

What is Quality Assurance?

Quality assurance refers to the systematic, structured, and continuous commitment to quality. It involves the establishment of an internal system of principles, criteria, and regulations, the effective operation of which is verified through periodic internal and external evaluation processes. These processes are publicly disclosed as required.

Ensuring and enhancing the quality of Higher Education Institutions, as well as of the programmes of study and the degrees they award, constitutes a fundamental objective of Greek higher education. The aim is to best meet the needs of society and the expectations placed upon higher education institutions. These objectives have been further strengthened through the institutionalization of certification at both institutional and academic unit levels, as well as at the level of study programmes.

Responsibility for the internal quality assurance of each higher education institution lies with the Quality Assurance Unit (QAU), a body of the institution’s central administration. External quality assurance is carried out by the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education (HAHE), which is responsible at the national level for supporting and conducting evaluation and certification processes for higher education institutions. A key objective of HAHE is to establish a unified framework for quality assurance in higher education and research at the national level, aligned with the principles and guidelines of the European Higher Education Area.

The Department of Economics has established and implements a defined Quality Policy for its Undergraduate Programme of Study (UPS), which is aligned with the Quality Policy of the University of Piraeus. The Department aims to provide high-quality educational services and to ensure the excellent academic training of its students. Its culture of quality is reflected in the commitment of its academic, research, and administrative staff, as well as its students, to this objective. Members of the Department operate in accordance with its values and goals, adopt common policies and practices, and actively participate in continuous improvement processes. The Department seeks to consistently respond to both international challenges in educational excellence and the expectations of students, alumni, and its academic, research, and administrative community.

The Department of Economics is committed to ensuring quality across all its academic, educational, and research activities by offering a modern, reliable, and competitive undergraduate programme. It places emphasis on innovation, the specialization of academic fields within economics, and the effective use of applied research. Ultimately, the Department recognizes the pivotal role of quality as a means of promoting equal access to knowledge, outward orientation, international recognition, and collaboration with key societal stakeholders.

Quality Policy of the Department of Economics

The academic identity of the Department and its Quality Policy are closely interconnected, promoting its mission and supporting the achievement of its strategic objectives. Within this framework, quality assurance processes are implemented to ensure the continuous improvement of its study programmes, research activities, and administrative services, aiming to enhance both academic performance and overall institutional operation. In this context, a culture of quality is fostered through the commitment and collaboration of academic, research, and administrative staff, as well as students.

The quality strategy of the Undergraduate Programme of Study, in pursuit of the Department’s objectives, is validated through established procedures that ensure continuity, effectiveness, and evaluation of relevant actions. A key objective of quality assurance is the provision of high-quality educational services in both core and contemporary areas of economic science, enabling students to appreciate the strongly interdisciplinary nature of their academic studies.

To implement its Quality Policy, the Department of Economics is committed to applying procedures that ensure:

  • the appropriateness of the structure and organization of the study programmes,
  • the achievement of learning outcomes and qualifications in accordance with the European and National Qualifications Frameworks for Higher Education,
  • the continuous improvement of the educational process and teaching effectiveness through innovative practices,
  • the enhancement of the qualifications of teaching staff and the promotion of both the quality and quantity of research output,
  • the integration of undergraduate courses with academic research,
  • the quality of support services, including administrative services, academic services (e.g. library services, laboratories), and student welfare services,
  • the alignment of learning outcomes with labour market needs.

The implementation of the Department’s Quality Policy is monitored through annual review and internal audit processes conducted by the Department’s Internal Evaluation Group (IEG), in collaboration with the University’s Quality Assurance Unit (QAU), as well as through regular reviews by the Department Assembly on specific quality-related matters.

Members of the Internal Evaluation Group (IEG) contribute to:

  • monitoring the implementation of quality objectives and aligning the Quality Policy with the broader strategic goals of the Department and the University (where necessary),
  • supporting decision-making for the continuous improvement of educational and research activities and implementing corrective actions when deviations from established targets are identified,
  • conducting internal evaluations,
  • maintaining constructive collaboration with the Quality Assurance Unit of the University of Piraeus.

The Quality Policy is published on the Department’s website and communicated, through electronic and printed means, to all stakeholders (academic staff, researchers, students, administrative and technical staff, partners, academic fellows, and collaborating professional, research, academic, and social institutions). Its dissemination aims to ensure effective implementation and the active engagement of all stakeholders in the prescribed quality assurance processes.
