SUMMARY:Geospatial Data in Economic Research: Basic Concepts and Applications - Vasilis Logothetis
DESCRIPTION:Assistant Prof. Vasilis Logothetis\, University of Ioannina \nDescription: This workshop offers a friendly introduction to the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in economic research. It will present the main types of spatial data as well as the fundamental geoprocessing methodologies that allow the use of sources such as satellite images\, historical maps\, and distance data. Through examples from publications\, it will be shown how spatial data open up research perspectives and provide more reliable identification strategies (such as IV and RDD). The aim is for participants to become familiar with the relevant tools and to understand their usefulness in economic analysis and research. \nIndicative bibliography:\n\nDell\, M.\, 2010. The persistent effects of Peru’s mining mita. Econometrica\, 78(6)\, pp.1863–1903. https://doi.org/10.3982/ECTA8121\nDuflo\, E. and Pande\, R.\, 2007. Dams. The Quarterly Journal of Economics\, 122(2)\, pp.601–646. https://doi.org/10.1162/qjec.122.2.601\nMichalopoulos\, S. and Papaioannou\, E.\, 2014. National institutions and subnational development in Africa. The Quarterly Journal of Economics\, 129(1)\, pp.151–213. https://doi.org/10.1093/qje/qjt029\nNunn\, N.\, 2008. The long-term effects of Africa’s slave trades. The Quarterly Journal of Economics\, 123(1)\, pp.139–176. https://doi.org/10.1162/qjec.2008.123.1.139\n\nParticipants are advised to download the open-source QGIS program (https://qgis.org/) in order to use the data and follow the replication. In addition\, for convenience\, when the replication is finalized\, I would like to ask them to download some additional files. Could this be done closer to the seminar date? If not\, then we will download them during the seminar break\, if foreseen.
